Near Eastside Resident Engagement Team
Just outside the heart of downtown Indianapolis, twenty-one different neighborhoods with roughly 30,000 residents form a community possessing the spirit and know-how to make the Near Eastside a great place to live, work, and play. The spirit of the Near Eastside community exists because of its strong sense of history combined with a dedication to community development.
Part of this dedication involves the Near Eastside Quality of Life Plan (the Plan), created in 2007 by neighbors for neighbors. The John H. Boner Community Center, as the convening agency on the Plan, employs the Near Eastside Community Builder to work with the neighborhood and partner organizations. The Community Builder focuses her work on the Plan, making connections between neighbors and partners, and engaging residents.
The Near Eastside Resident Engagement Team members will work with the Community Builder to encourage residents to voice their ideas and opinions about work happening in their neighborhood. They will also engage residents to find out what work the residents would like to see done and how they might be willing to give of their time and energy. Their time will be focused on organizing, marketing, social media, relationship building, and asset based community development.
Through this program team members will learn to:
- Identify different approaches to organizing
- Analyze tactics used by community organizers
- Determine ways that residents can be involved in working in their own neighborhoods
- Propose ways to address the challenges and opportunities of the Near Eastside, Indianapolis community
