Race for Roofs

Reason for the Run:
Englewood Community Development Corporation (ECDC), has a history of working to strengthen the quality of life for our neighbors on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. This focus has been maintained by offering quality, affordable housing to our diverse neighbors, such as low-income families, the formerly homeless, and those who live with mental illness. Daily, we learn how to better care for our neighbors. This has led us to host an annual 5 mile run/walk with the proceeds going towards rental scholarships for our neighbors who need assistance as they work to provide themselves and their families with a permanent, healthy, stable home.  Registration is still open!  Click on their EventBrite page for more details:  http://2013raceforroofs.eventbrite.com

Join us on Saturday, June 22 for a special FREE outdoor screening of RACING DREAMS. June’s Popped Up Cinema is brought to you In partnership with the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association and Indy Parks at Highland Park.   1100 E. New York Street

RACING DREAMS is a coming-of-age story that follows three young race car drivers with dreams of someday driving for NASCAR. The film has been described as “Catcher in the Rye meets Talladaga Nights.” Watch the trailer here: http://racingdreamsfilm.com/

The event is FREE and open to the public. Gates will open at 6:30, and the film begins at dusk.

Popped Up Cinema is funded by a $10,000 grant that the organization received in February of this year. Indy Film Fest, represented by Craig Mince, won the grant in a competition that gave individual presenters five slides and five minutes to tell the judging panel how they would improve Indy residents’ access to culture and creativity. The grant, known as the 5×5, is funded by the Efroymson Family Foundation, a CICF fund; and the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation.

James O. Woodruff laid out Woodruff Place in 1872, envisioning a residential park with shade-covered sidewalks, fountains, statues, and wide streets with grassy esplanades, all inspired by European communities he had visited.

Green Picket Fences:  Willard Park Neighborhood

Check out the great work happening in the Willard Park Neighborhood!  Each picket represents an initiative to build community and manifest the Near Eastside Quality of Life plan.  Green Shepherd Project is a sheep mowing program to reclaim the “look” of our neighborhood from early abandoned war zone to modern English estate.  Green Streets is an Indy Food Fund funded project allowing the neighborhood to buy a golf cart to sell food they grow in Willard Park door to door within Willard Park to eradicate the “food desert”.  For more information check out their Facebook page

National Dump The Pump Day – June 20, 2013

On June 20, 2013, American Public Transportation Association (APTA), and public transportation systems across the country will celebrate the 8th Annual National Dump the Pump Day.

In these tough economic times with high gas prices, everyone is looking for a way to save money. National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transportation (instead of driving) and save money.

Riding public transit is an economical way to save money, particularly when gas prices are high. The latest APTA Transit Savings Report shows that a two person household that downsizes to one car can save – on the average – more than $9,700 a year.

Show your support by walking, biking, taking IndyGo, carpooling, or finding some other form of transportation to get around on the 20th.  Make a day of it and get your friends involved!

Quick Facts

  • In 2012, Americans took 10.5 billion trips on public transportation.
  • 35 million times each weekday, people board public transportation.
  • Public transportation is a $57 billion industry that employs more than 400,000 people.
  • More than 7,300 organizations provide public transportation in the United States.

  • Every $10 million in operating investment yields $32 million in increased business sales.

Public Transportation Saves Fuel and Reduces Congestion

  • Public transportation has a proven record of reducing congestion.
  • The latest research shows that in 2011, U.S. public transportation use saved 865 million hours in travel time and 450 million gallons of fuel in 498 urban areas.

  • Households near public transit drive an average of 4,400 fewer miles than households with no access to public transit.

  • Public transportation use in the United States reduces our nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually. This is equivalent to Washington, DC; New York City; Atlanta; Denver; and Los Angeles combined stopping using electricity.
  • One person with a 20-mile round trip commute who switches from driving to public transit can reduce his or her daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds, or more than 4,800 pounds in a year.
  • A single commuter switching his or her commute to public transportation can reduce a household’s carbon emissions by 10 percent and up to 30 percent if he or she eliminates a second car.

Public Transportation Enhances Personal Opportunities

  • Public transportation provides personal mobility and freedom for people from every walk of life.
  • Access to public transportation gives people transportation options to commute to work, go to school, visit friends, or travel to a doctor’s office.
