All right, you’ve got me. There aren’t actually any bears. But there ARE 5Ks and PI Days! There is a little something for everyone in this week’s edition of the Near Eastside Notes. You’ll find activities that are just for the grown-ups, and some fun (and hilarious!) family friendly events as well.
If you’ve got an announcement or event that our neighbors should hear about, be sure to send those in to CoraLyn Turentine by emailing cturentine@jhbcc.org or calling 317.808.2336. And don’t keep the good news you find here to yourself; share it with your neighbors and encourage them to join in the fun!
Happy Reading!

TOMORROW: NESCO’S 7TH ANNUAL PI DAY
NOW AT THE LEGACY CENTER
The only thing better than a neighborhood party is a neighborhood pie contest! Apple, cherry, key lime, pumpkin, sweet potato, lemon meringue, banana cream, razzleberry…hungry yet?
You can whip out your BEST secret pie recipe and enter it to win a glamorous prize pack on Saturday March 14th at 11:00 am right here at the LEGACY CENTER. And let me tell you, this pie contest is serious business. You and your home-made pie have the chance to be named on the new NESCO PI Day plaque displayed at Pogue’s Run Grocer (can we say ‘bragging rights’!). You’ll also win an incredible gift basket of kitchen gadgets from ZESCO.COM!
Now some of you are pie-makers, but let’s be honest…most of us are probably pie EATERS! If you can’t get enough of some delicious homemade pie, then you need to make sure you’re the highest bidder at the Pie Auction. You read that right! Contestants will be submitting 2 pies: one for the pie contest and one for the auction.
For contest entry information, visit our event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1540219986254336.

How do you define “quality of life” for our community? Maybe it’s having litter-free streets and well-lit neighborhoods. Maybe it’s having strong locally-owned businesses, and a high employment rate.
Here’s the deal, for more than 40 years, Near Eastside neighbors have held onto the strong philosophy that ordinary residents can mobilize extraordinary growth and prosperity in their communities. Most recently, these efforts have been propelled forward by the Near Eastside Quality of Life Plan (for which John H. Boner Community Center is the convening agency), an intensive, neighborhood-driven strategy for building the Near Eastside into a community that our residents can be proud of.
About 4 times per year, neighbors are encouraged to come out to the Neighborhood Summits to provide input and inspiration for this plan, as well as to network with one another, and to provide progress reports on current initiatives.
So whether or not you’ve ever participated in a neighborhood event before, whether you feel very confident and competent in driving neighborhood initiatives or feel a bit like a fish out of water, we welcome and encourage you come out and add your voice.
Groups wishing to reserve two to three minutes to provide an update, make note of a community challenge, or to celebrate an accomplishment can send in their agenda items to CoraLyn Turentine, Director of Neighborhood Engagement for the John H. Boner Community Center, at cturentine@jhbcc.org or by calling 317.808.2336

ORDINARY NEIGHBORS ARE SHAPING
REDEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Monday March 16, 6-8pm
East Tenth United Methodist Church
2327 E. 10th St.
If you use Mass Ave or Brookside to travel back and forth between the Near Eastside and downtown, then you know what an odd strip it seems to be. Warehouses, industrial spaces, and that big blue building all draw our curiosity, but what goes on in those buildings and how can they positively impact life here on the Near Eastside? Join Near East Area Renewal (NEAR) and East Tenth Street Civic Association as they host a meeting to share ideas and gain feedback from neighbors on redevelopment initiatives being facilitated by Riley Area Development Corporation (RADC) with funding from Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).
If you can’t attend this meeting, don’t worry! Additional meetings are scheduled for April 8 and May 13 at Spades Park Library.
