Near Eastside Neighbors & Friends –
I may be a little biased, but I happen to think that the Near-Eastside is home to some of the most talented, most passionate, and most invested community members in the city. Not to toot our own horn, but look at how much we are willing to pour into making this a great community to live, work, and play in! For the past several decades, we’ve made an intentional effort to band together for the greater good, and those efforts are paying off. There are numerous upcoming opportunities for our neighborhood youth and adults to gain scholarships to further their education, build new skills in crime prevention and community building, gain meaningful work experience, and even win cash prizes! Yes, you read that correctly!
Someone is going to take advantage of these opportunities and reap the benefits…it might as well be the Near Eastside! So check out these upcoming opportunities for our neighbors to grow and shine! Several Middle-Schoolers will be awarded cash prizes…they might as well be Near-Eastside Middle Schoolers!
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and its partner organizations are sponsoring the Money Smart Kid Essay Contest in support of Money Smart Week Indiana April 18-25, 2015.
Students in grades 6 through 8 are encouraged to answer this year’s Money Smart essay question (see below) with a typed essay of 500 words or less.
Three finalists, along with their families and teachers or adult sponsors, will be selected to attend the Money Smart Week Indiana Kickoff Luncheon in Indianapolis on Friday, April 17, 2015.
The winners will receive a CollegeChoice 529 Savings Account through the generous sponsorship of CollegeChoice 529, ISM College Planning, Indiana Council for Economic Education, the John H. Boner Community Center, Fifth Third Bank and PNC Bank. The winner will receive $1000 and the runners up will each receive $750.

Open for the community:
- Learn the signs of gang involvement
- Learn about drug trends affecting the community

- Hear from IMPD and other public safety experts in the gang/narcotics field
Those interested should plan to meet at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 1224 Laurel Street, Indianapolis on Saturday March 7 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Registration begins at 9:30 am.

Youth Tree Team is KIB’s seven-week summer job program for currently enrolled high school students (and adult leaders) who are interested in improving their community through improving their environment. You will learn not only how to properly plant and maintain trees, but also hone valuable skills like professionalism, environmental responsibility, financial management and team building.
Every year, Youth Tree Team members water around 5,000 KIB trees each week—by hand (that means you have to be able to carry at least 80lbs)!

Our Neighbors Could Be The Next Recipients of these INCREDIBLE Scholarship Opportunities!
We currently are seeking the 2015 class of Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars and encourage you to help open the door of opportunity for a deserving individual to attend Ivy Tech or IUPUI. The application deadline is March 1. Scholarship recipients are undergraduates who fall into one of these areas:
- Are 25 years or older, with dependents
• Have physical disabilities
• Were raised in the child welfare system
Nina Scholars receive financial support toward the cost of attendance for up to six years at IUPUI or four years at Ivy Tech. School program staff coordinates services, tutoring, mentoring and group support for Scholars.
Since its inception in 2001, the Trust has presented a defining moment in the lives of 509 students through the Nina Scholars program. We invite you to help us identify individuals who you feel meet the criteria and would embrace this opportunity to become a Nina Scholar.

BUILDING AN EFFECTIVE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
Come together with fellow students, academics, and community members for a three-part series that presents critical tools for community organizing. Through a dynamic, hands-on training process, the audience will gain both a theoretical understanding of community organizing as well as develop practical skills and access to tools used in developing and advancing issue advocacy campaigns. Space is limited, we strongly encourage participants to attend all three training sessions. Preference will be given to those who plan to attend all three days. Training is FREE and will take place at the Chase Legacy Center.
Participants will:
- Actively participate in simulations to begin to understand important concepts such as power, relationships, and tactics
- Develop a groundwork for understanding the lessons of the history of community organizing and its role in promoting healthy democracies
- Learn important tools to support their involvement in issue advocacy
- Learn campaign development and how to bring a vision to reality and take action
- Connect with others on the campus and around Indianapolis with shared interests in community organizing tactics
- Learn about and have the opportunity to network with local efforts and community organizing campaigns to share tips and resources
