National Night Out is a unique crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). “National Night Out’ is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights, neighborhoods “celebrate” NNO with a variety of events such as block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, neighborhood parades, pizza parties, flashlight walks and youth activities.”  To register your NNO event before the deadline contact your district.

INDOT South Split Project

I-65 – I70 South Split Construction Project

INDOT is launching an accelerated project that will close I-65 and I-70 between the north and south splits on the east side of downtown Indianapolis for up to 90 days this fall to reconstruct and lower pavement beneath seven bridges. The project is necessary to increase bridge clearances because unpermitted and off-route trucks with oversize loads repeatedly strike these bridges, posing a safety concern.

A public open house is tentatively scheduled for July 11 to present project details and answer questions. The expectation is that the highway will be closed by early September. The rebuilt highway is expected to be open to traffic by the end of November

INDOT will partner with the City of Indianapolis to keep traffic flowing and access open to downtown cultural districts, applying techniques that were successfully used during the 2003 Hyperfix project. Message boards and signage will direct I-65 and I-70 through traffic to use the south and west legs of I-465.

The event includes basic training for volunteer surveyors, materials, lunch, and support. This is an opportunity to not only name and rate conditions, but receive electronic documentation to advocate for improvements for your neighborhood. Volunteers are sought from each NESCO neighborhood. Please contact I AD for more info or to volunteer: 317-808-2308 or Dan O’Dea at dodea@jhbcc.org.

Indy DO Day

October 10 – 12th 2013

An Indianapolis grassroots coalition is seeking to unite and mobilize 100,000 volunteers for community-wide service initiative – called Indy DO Day. Organizers envision that the people-powered initiative will for the first time energize the entire community to come together in service over the course of three days – October 10-12, 2013

Neighbors are asked that if they are doing work on smaller projects in their community over that weekend, to take pictures, engage in social media, and talk about their projects on various social media sources.  In the case of larger projects, neighborhoods, small business, and/or organizations are asked to go to the NESCO website (https://nescocommunity.org) and register their project with Indy DO Day.  Businesses and other larger organizations can then go to the Indy DO Day website and look to see how they can help.  Businesses can also submit listings of supplies that they are able to commit to projects.  On the Near Eastside, neighborhood organizations are looking for ways that they can give back to their own communities during this event.

The goal of Indy DO Day is for residents of Indianapolis to get to know their neighbors, take ownership of their neighborhoods and take care of one another. A community service project can be anything from hyper-local, neighborhood-focused projects that can be as varied as getting your hands dirty through a beautification project to donating your skills or materials to a local charity to giving your time to help a neighbor in need.

Do you have an idea for a project in your own neighborhood?  Submit them on the NESCO website!  Just click on “Submit an Idea” and fill in the blanks.  Ideas will be posted, collected, and grouped based on topic.  Then organizations will be able to help neighbors address those ideas through Indy Do Day.
