Healthy Smiles for Employability

Indiana University School of Dentistry is currently looking for applicants and candidate referrals for their
Healthy Smiles for Employability program.

Healthy Smiles for Employability (HSE) provides full or partial dentures for 20 uninsured, adult residents and connects them with local job assistance services. The program aims to enhance employability, oral health and well-being of residents in the Near Eastside and surrounding community.

The flyer below shares eligibility criteria and information for interested applicants and community partners. Interested and eligible residents will be asked to meet with HSE to learn more about the program. The application process includes this initial meeting as well as a dental screening at the Indiana University School of Dentistry’s Student Outreach Clinic.

The Indiana University School of Dentistry’s Student Outreach Clinic at People’s Health and Dental Center operates on the first and third Saturdays of each month for residents without dental insurance or who are enrolled in Medicaid. All student dental services are directly supervised by IU faculty dentist volunteers.

Healthy Smiles for EmployabilityRural Street Bridge over Pogue’s Run Mid-June DPW will begin replacing the Rural Street Bridge over Pogue’s Run. They expect the project to be completed in November 2013. The bridge will be widened to include two 12-foot travel lanes, 8-foot sidewalks, 8-foot shoulders as well as new railings on each side.  This will be a phased project and the bridge will not be closed during construction, rather traffic will be shifted into narrow single lanes during the three different phases. The sidewalks will be  open during construction, but only on one side, the side that is not being worked on. Construction will take place Monday through Friday during normal  working hours.  Brookside Pkwy North Drive WILL be closed but in two phases beginning in June with street closures east of Rural Street first, than later in  phase two, Brookside Pkwy west of Rural Street will be closed.  This project is being completed as part of the RebuildIndy initiative to transform the city through improvements to restore items within the infrastructure that pose a public safety threat to neighborhoods.  For more  information on this project visit:
http://www.indy.gov/RebuildIndy or call 317-327-2656 and ask about “Rural Street Bridge over Pogue’s Run.”

NESCO Games

What are the NESCO Neighborhood Games?
Each summer, the Near Eastside Neighborhoods in Indianapolis, Indiana come together for a week of neighborhood-friendly, Olympic-style games. These events celebrate friendships, good-natured competition, light-hearted fun, and community cooperation. Events such as basketball, softball, volleyball, street hockey, dodgeball, table tennis, corn hole, cooking, frisbee golf, running, cards, and trivia allow for a week of great fun for all who live or work on the Near Eastside.

How does it work?
Individuals and teams enter events in an effort to try and win a medal for their neighborhood or Near Eastside Organization. Like the Olympics, each medal (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) is worth points (5, 3, and 1). At the end of the week of competition, the neighborhood or organization with the most points wins the NESCO Neighborhood Games. Please take the time to visit our events page to learn more about these games and the opportunities available to you and your community!
